Consultation
Even though exercise has been shown to decrease the risk of many diseases, reduce blood pressure, and diminish feelings of depression and anxiety, reports indicate that only 25% of adults engage in 20+ minutes of vigorous physical activity 3 or more times per week, and 38% are completely sedentary (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services). Easier said than done, right?
Initiating and maintaining an exercise program can present a challenge for many people. We all know the merits of exercising, and on at least some level, believe we should start or step up our physical activity level. Yet the fact remains that initiating an effective exercise program is difficult and maintaining one often poses even more of a challenge. Within 6 months of starting a program, 50% or more of people dropout. So why is this so difficult?
There is no cookie-cutter, one size fits all remedy. Exercise is about lifestyle change and the adoption of healthy habits. Exercise psychologists or consultants work with their clients to better understand the factors that contribute to initial and sustained involvement in exercise, as well as the barriers to exercising. The exercise consultant often collaborates with other health professionals, such as personal trainers and nutritionists, to provide clients with the most comprehensive approach to physical fitness.
